Bye Bye Back Rolls

after back lift by las vegas plastic surgeonsSignificant weight loss is something to be celebrated. Your body is happier and your quality of life is increased when you are not carrying around excessive weight.

Unfortunately for some people, extreme weight loss means there is an accumulation of excess skin on your body. That loose and sagging skin can be around your abdomen, breasts, arms, pubic area and even your back. This guide, assembled with the help of expert Las Vegas plastic surgeons, will help you understand a solution for the presence of back rolls and folds.

The Upper Body Lift

To address those frustrating back rolls and skin folds, you can choose to undergo an upper body lift. This is sometimes also called a back lift or a bra line back lift.

This plastic surgery Las Vegas procedure is done by removing the excess skin on the upper back that is creating the folds and creases that are keeping you from enjoying your new body.

When the incision is made, considerations are made to try to hide the scar as much as possible. For men, the scar will be visible when you’re shirtless. For women, the incision will be made so that the scar can be hidden underneath most bra and swimsuit styles.

Additionally, it is not uncommon for a patient to undergo a liposuction procedure in addition to a back lift. It becomes possible to remove more skin when liposuction is done at the same time as the removal of the extra skin.

Benefits

This procedure is beneficial for a number of different reasons. First, the removal of the excess skin makes it less likely for moisture and sweat to collect between the folds. That means there is a significantly reduced likelihood of rashes and various skin infections.

Another benefit is that you will be able to feel much more confident in your clothes after the procedure. Without the excess skin and folds, you will no longer have to hide your body behind loose fitting clothes when you have worked so hard to lose the weight.

Just remember to speak with one of the Las Vegas plastic surgeons about possible complications. With every procedure, there is a chance that something may go awry. So, during your consultation, make sure you bring up anything that you may be concerned about. The more thoroughly you discuss your concerns before the procedure, the more you can trust the success of your healing after the procedure.

Suffering from Flabby Arms After Weight Loss?

flabby arms need las vegas plastic surgeonsAs you grow and gain weight, whether healthy or unhealthy, your wonderfully flexible skin stretches to accommodate you. When you lose weight, your skin will generally shrink back to “normal” as long as the weight loss didn’t happen too quickly.

In some cases, the skin at the arms is just unable to snap back into place. When that happens, you do have options. A brachioplasty, or an arm lift, from one of the Las Vegas plastic surgeons can give you the toned and tight upper arms that you have been working so hard for.

Just like with all forms of plastic surgery Las Vegas procedures, there are different types of arm lifts. The type of arm lift is determined by how much excess skin and fat that needs to be removed. The more significant the amount of removal, the more significant the resulting scar will be.

Mini Brachioplasty

In this version of the procedure, there is a relatively small amount of excess skin that needs to be removed. Usually, that extra skin is localized near the armpit. As a result, the scar from this procedure is localized in the same area. You will only be able to see it when you lift your arm above your head while you are wearing sleeveless tops. Even in cap sleeves, this scar will be covered.

Traditional Brachioplasty

This type of arm lift targets excess skin from your armpit to your elbow. The incision will begin at your armpit and will run down a length of your arm that has been deemed necessary for the best possible results of your procedure. The resulting scar can be hidden with tops that have a three-quarter sleeve or longer. In a short sleeved or sleeveless top, you can see this scar during various activities.

Extended Brachioplasty

This procedure extends the traditional brachioplasty to include the skin that is under your armpit and down the side of your chest. The resulting scar will be in the shape of an L and the incisions join at your armpit. While a majority of the scarring can be hidden with clothing, you run into the same exposure as a traditional arm lift when you wear short-sleeved or sleeveless tops.

Complications

Keep in mind that complications are possible and can include delayed healing, infection and hematoma. Reduce the likelihood of this happening by scheduling a consultation with one of the skilled Las Vegas plastic surgeons available in the valley. With the professionals at Reynolds Plastic Surgery, your care is a top priority. For more information about arm lifts, call 702.410.9800.

Liposuction Procedure Saved This Woman’s Vision

Liposuction Procedure Saved This Woman’s Vision

Liposuction procedure saves a woman's visionAt the age of 31, a severe headache let Miami resident Julia Matsumoto know she had an underlying problem with her vision called optic neuritis. The condition is caused by the inflammation of the optic nerve and often results in reduced vision in the affected eye. But not even her doctors could expect that the ultimate treatment for this condition would be liposuction.

Liposuction Procedure Cures Vision

Usually, optic neuritis responds to steroids because they can reduce the inflammation that causes damage to the nerves. Matsumoto’s ophthalmologist was confident this treatment would control her declining vision. Unfortunately, the high dose of 100 milligrams per day caused side effects that nearly killed her.

Matsumoto gained over 100 pounds in approximately three months. Surprisingly, detrimental organ and joint damage inside her body were matched by massive stretch marks on the outside of her body. Matsumoto’s doctor couldn’t help but wonder if saving the patient’s vision was important enough to continue placing her life at risk.

It was a heart-wrenching moment when Matsumoto accepted that her declined vision would be permanent. She had to reassure her daughter that she would be able to remember how the little girl looked.

A Miracle Treatment

Instead of giving up, the ophthalmologist continued to look for answers. It was during this quest for alternative treatments that Matsumoto was introduced to Dr. Mark Berman of the California Stem Cell Treatment Center. In his research, he found that fat is loaded with stem cells, which might be able to bring back some of her vision.

In 2011, Matsumoto was able to begin her controversial treatment. After she received liposuction to remove some excess fat from around the abdominal area, the stem cells were separated from the fat and blood. Following this procedure, the concentrated “healing” cells were infused back into her body with an IV.

After only one week, everyone considered Matsumoto’s progress nothing short of a miracle. Four days later, it was noted that Julia felt like a normal mother again, claiming that she had been given a new life. Doctors were then able to successfully wean this young woman off the steroids threatening her life. The treatment is repeated every two months to maintain Matsumoto’s vision.

The cause of optic neuritis is unknown, and what causes a relatively standard treatment such as steroids to turn on a patient is also unknown. It’s exciting that facilities like the California Stem Cell Treatment Center are exploring alternative measures to expand patient options. Unfortunately, stem cell therapies are not approved by the Food and Drug Administration, so they are experimental and expensive.

New Liposuction Studies

New Las Vegas liposuction studiesNew liposuction studies show that having liposuction procedures may increase the accumulation of fat in the body. This may be due to the body compensating for the sudden lack of fat. This new accumulation may also increase the risk of cardiovascular disease.

Luckily, this effect can be counteracted by physical activity.

Liposuction is one of the most popular aesthetic procedures performed worldwide, but its long-term effects still remain unclear. Some studies have shown that the sudden decrease in body fat may affect body composition by triggering mechanisms that create body fat regain. However, current studies suggest that physical activity following surgery can prevent the fat regain.

“We’ve found that removing fat tissue from the body may result in a total energy expenditure and compensatory growth of visceral fat which is associated with heart disease,” said Dr. Fabiana Benatti of the University of Sao Paulo in Brazil. “The good news is, physical exercise training is effective in counteracting this compensatory growth. If someone chooses to have liposuction procedures done, it is essential that they exercise after surgery.”

In this study, 35 healthy women underwent a small-volume liposuction of their abdomen. Two months following the surgery, the women were randomly placed into two groups.

One group was placed on a 4-month exercise program, and the other was not. Liposuction was effective in reducing extraneous amounts of fat in the body, but after six months without exercise, that group showed a significant increase in visceral fat.

Compared to those who did exercise, this was a significant difference.

“We believe patients should be informed of the possibilities of this fat growth following their procedures. As with any surgical procedure, they should also be informed of the potential health risks,” said Benatti. “Additionally, health professionals are encouraged to recommend exercise programs as an intervention following liposuction surgery.”

Liposuction has been proven to reduce the presence of harmful fats in the body, and get those who have difficulty losing weight back to a healthy place. Having liposuction done along with a tummy tuck is a great way to start your journey back to health. However, it is important to be aware of the possible risks that come along with this procedure. Don’t expect that once you have the procedure done, you will simply be able to return to a sedentary life. It is essential that exercise is implemented into your routine after you have completely healed from the procedure.

If you feel you are a candidate for a tummy tuck or liposuction, contact our office today to set up a consultation. Our surgeons are board-certified, and will be able to help you with any questions or concerns you may have prior to undergoing a cosmetic procedure.
